Description
Corn, also known as maize, is a widely cultivated food crop that originated in Central America and has since spread throughout the Americas. After European contact with the Americas in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, corn was introduced to the rest of the world. In Vietnam, corn plants were brought from China as a result of their agricultural practices.
As an agricultural crop, corn plays a significant role in Vietnam, ranking as the second largest crop after rice. It is a member of the Poaceae family, characterized by its grain-like kernels that are enclosed in pods. Although the kernels resemble individual fruits, they do not merge into a single mass. The kernels are typically pea-sized and form consistent rows around a central white core. Each corn cob measures around 10-25 cm (4-10 inches) in length and contains approximately 200-400 seeds.
The color of corn kernels can vary, with options including light black, gray blue, red, white, and yellow. This diversity adds aesthetic appeal to the crop, making it visually appealing as well as nutritionally diverse.
