Basic information

We offer a classification of old mineral wool or similar mineral fibres without the RAL quality mark based on their potential carcinogenic risk. The carcinogenicity index, KI, is a dimensionless quantity that determines the level of carcinogenic risk based on the material composition of the evaluated mineral fibres. The calculation, according to IFA BIA method 7488, takes into account the mass contents of Na2O, K2O, CaO, MgO, BaO, and B2O3, minus twice the mass content of Al2O3.

Vitreous mineral fibres are categorized based on the KI according to TRGS 905 guidelines. If the dimensions of the fibres meet the WHO fibre definition (length > 5µm, diameter 3:1), glassy WHO fibres with a carcinogenicity index KI of 30 and KI of 40 fall into specific classifications.
