Naturally occurring in the environment, sulfur is abundant, ranking as the thirteenth most prevalent element in the Earth's crust. Traditionally, elemental sulfur was mined from the Earth, but this method has receded in the past decade, contributing to less than 2% of global production. Nowadays, the majority of elemental sulfur is obtained as a co-product during oil and gas extraction in a process called sweetening.
