Description
Saffron, also known as red gold, is a highly prized spice derived from the purple flowers of the Crocus sativus plant. Each of these flowers contains three vibrant red stigmas, which are painstakingly separated by hand. These precious strands are then carefully dried and stored in airtight containers, away from any exposure to light.
The characteristics of saffron are as follows:
- To produce just one gram of dry saffron, an astonishing 150 flowers are required.
- In most culinary preparations, only 4 or 5 stigmas are needed to impart a rich and distinctive flavor.
- Saffron is best harvested at dawn, during the sleep phase of the flowers, in order to obtain the highest quality strands.
- The origin, size, humidity level, packaging details, quantity, and price of saffron can be tailored according to discussions with the buyer.
- The shipping terms (INCOTERMS) can also be determined based on whether the saffron is to be transported via air or sea.
